FMCSA Update: Medical Examiner’s Certification Has Gone Digital
Jun 25

In May 2025, the FMCSA announced that CLP and CDL drivers’ medical examiner’s certifications would be transferred to a digital registry. All states were required to be in compliance with the new law by June 23, 2025.
What this means for you
-
You cannot use the paper copy of the Medical Examiner’s Certificate (form MCSA-5876) to prove that you’ve passed your medical exam.
-
The medical examiner does not have to give you a paper copy of your certification for you to keep on you when you’re driving.
-
Law enforcement, licensing agencies, and employers will be able to verify your medical status on digital registry.
-
You should contact your medical examiner to verify that your identifying information is correct in the new registry.
-
Make sure that your examiner has a photocopy of your CLP or CDL on file
Next steps
- Check with your medical examiner to ensure your certificate is correctly entered in the registry — drivers don’t have access.
- Ask the examiner to enter your results while you're present, so you can confirm accuracy.
- Request a copy of your record to check for errors.
- If law enforcement says your certification isn't showing up:
- Call your examiner and ask them to verify and correct any errors in the registry.
- Contact your SDLA to confirm the update posted correctly and help troubleshoot.
- If it’s still unresolved, reach out to FMCSA Tech Support at fmctechsup@dot.gov or (617) 494-3003.
