Do I Have to Complete Entry Level Driver Training?

Mar 19
Since the  Entry Level Driver Training regulations went into effect on February 7, 2022, many people have been asking - do I have to complete the Entry Level Driver Training?

This blog outlines who specifically needs to comply with the ELDT requirement.

What is Entry Level Driver Training?

The Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirement sets the baseline for training requirements for entry-level drivers seeking commercial licenses and certain endorsements for their license. The ELDT establishes a nationwide standard to ensure all new commercial drivers have the same safety skills regardless of their licensed state, the school or CDL training program where they learned to drive.

Before the ELDT, commercial drivers only had to pass a knowledge test to receive their permit and complete a road test to receive their commercial drivers license. The ELDT requirement now requires those seeking a CDL or endorsement to follow a specific curriculum of training, prior to their knowledge or road tests at the DMV.

Who Must Take ELDT?

So - what does this mean for you?

If you are seeking one the following for the first time, you will be required to comply with the ELDT program:

Class A
Commercial Driver's Licence

Class B
Commercial Driver's Licence

Class B to A Commercial Driver's Licence

Hazardous Materials (H) Endorsement

Passenger (P) Endorsement

School Bus (S) Endorsement

If you are renewing your CDL, you are NOT required to comply with the ELDT requirement.

How Do I Take ELDT?

Now that you know that you must complete the ELDT requirement, the next step is figuring out how to get it done. That's where we can help.

For all CDLs and Endorsements, the first step is to complete the theory portion of the requirement. The theory requirement is a training course that covers the required topics  for each CDL and Endorsement.

We provide the theory training online. You can find our courses here:
